Jan Paul van Hecke has no shortage of admirers this summer, but one key factor appears to have given Tottenham a major advantage.
Despite bringing in free agent Marcos Senesi from Bournemouth, Tottenham are still expected to sign another centre-back this summer, especially with Cristian Romero’s departure looking increasingly likely.
That target is believed to be Jan Paul van Hecke, De Zerbi’s former player at Brighton. The Seagulls value the Dutch international at around £70 million, and Spurs have already had two bids rejected.
We recently reported that a third proposal has now been sent, and while the two clubs remain some distance apart in their valuations, Tottenham have already received a major boost. Personal terms have reportedly already been agreed with Van Hecke, and one factor appears to have been decisive in that development.

Roberto De Zerbi proving decisive in Tottenham’s Jan Paul van Hecke pursuit
When a player is part of a club that has qualified for Europe for the first time in its history and is attracting interest from teams such as Liverpool and Chelsea, choosing Tottenham instead naturally raises questions.
And the biggest reason appears to be Roberto De Zerbi. Sources indicate that Van Hecke has already held discussions with his former manager about the project being built in north London.
The pair worked closely together during nearly two years at Brighton, and Van Hecke is already familiar with De Zerbi’s demanding style, particularly his insistence that defenders are comfortable in possession and capable of building play from the back. Equally, the Dutchman is also viewed as an ideal fit for that system.
Following those conversations, it is understood that Van Hecke’s representatives have informed interested clubs that Tottenham is now his preferred destination this summer, handing Spurs a significant advantage in the race for his signature.
Jan Paul van Hecke keen to resolve future before World Cup
According to TeamTALK, Van Hecke and those representing him would ideally like his future to be resolved before the weekend so he can focus entirely on the Netherlands’ World Cup campaign.
Tottenham are believed to be working hard to reach an agreement as quickly as possible, although Brighton have remained firm throughout negotiations.
The Seagulls have consistently maintained a valuation in excess of £70 million and are determined to secure the best possible deal should they agree to part ways with one of their most important players.
While there is still a gap between what Brighton want and what Tottenham are currently willing to pay, there remains confidence from all parties involved that a compromise can eventually be reached.
