Xavi Simons endured a frustrating end to his first season at Tottenham Hotspur after suffering a serious injury, but the midfielder has now provided an encouraging update as he continues his recovery journey.

Tottenham Hotspur had to cope with a severe injury crisis that affected almost every area of their squad last season.

At one stage, as many as 12 players were sidelined through either injury or suspension as Tottenham navigated what ultimately proved to be a disappointing campaign.

Among those was new signing Xavi Simons, who struggled to make an immediate impact following his move from RB Leipzig.

However, as the season progressed, the Dutchman slowly found his feet and played a crucial role in Spurs’ survival run, scoring against Brighton & Hove Albion to help secure a 2-2 draw.

Tottenham star Xavi Simons provides injury update

Simons would, however, suffer his injury before the end of the season in the match against Wolverhampton Wanderers, where he damaged his ACL and was stretchered off.

It was a huge blow for Tottenham, who lost one of their key players at the time, and the midfielder is not expected to return until sometime next year as he continues his rehabilitation.

However, speaking about his recovery progress, Simons has now opened up on the difficult early stages following the injury and how things have improved over recent weeks.

He said, speaking on his Snapchat: “The first week was one of the craziest experiences that I’ve had in my life if I’m honest. Not much swelling in my knee, but crazy pain, sleepless nights because of the pain, feeling a bit useless because you can’t do anything on your own and had to take a lot of medication.

“After the second week, everything went upwards, and I made little steps every day. So now I’m really happy where I am!”

Spurs have options despite Xavi Simons setback

The season has since ended, with attention now turning to the transfer market and the World Cup. Simons’ injury unfortunately meant he missed the tournament entirely.

Tottenham do, however, appear to have enough depth within the squad to cope with the absence of the 22-year-old.

James Maddison, who suffered a similar injury, returned towards the end of last season and looks set to feature for Tottenham during pre-season and at the start of the new campaign.

Meanwhile, Spurs continue to be linked with additional midfield options, including Morgan Gibbs-White and Sandro Tonali, as they look to strengthen their ranks.
