Djed Spence’s future at Tottenham remains uncertain despite his outstanding World Cup campaign, with his reported asking price prompting Alasdair Gold to question the club’s thinking.
Following last season’s battle against relegation, Roberto De Zerbi made it clear that major changes were needed to his squad, admitting that only “10 to 12 players” were good enough to be part of his plans moving forward.
Many of the departures that have followed, or are expected before the transfer window closes, have not come as a major surprise, including players such as Radu Dragusin, Cristian Romero and Guglielmo Vicario.
However, few supporters expected Djed Spence to be among those names after the full-back enjoyed an outstanding World Cup with England, helping Thomas Tuchel’s side secure a third-place finish while establishing himself as one of the tournament’s standout performers.
Despite that, Tottenham have spent the last few days in talks with Inter Milan over a possible deal for the 25-year-old. Man United and Everton have also been credited with an interest, with Spurs reportedly open to offers after Spence struggled to establish himself ahead of Pedro Porro and Destiny Udogie under De Zerbi last season.
Alasdair Gold cannot believe Djed Spence’s reported asking price
Tottenham signed Spence from Middlesbrough in 2022 in a deal worth up to £20m, but the defender has seen his stock significantly rise during his three years at the club, particularly after his performances on the international stage this summer.
Even so, several reports have suggested Spurs would be willing to listen to offers in the region of £25m to £35m, a valuation that has surprised many supporters.
Football.London’s Alasdair Gold admitted he was equally stunned by the figures, saying on his latest YouTube video:
“We’ll talk about Djed (Spence) a little bit and how the price tag that I’ve heard about is utterly ridiculous… I mean, utterly ridiculous…
“£25m as a price tag for him, not a chance. You’d have to be insane, Tottenham. First off, I don’t think they should sell him anyway. Have two terrific players for every position, that would be the best way to do it.
“But £25m, they signed him for a £20m package. He’s got three years left on his contract, and he’s just had a mega World Cup. Just no, don’t do it.”
What Djed Spence is thinking about a move away from Tottenham
While Spence’s performances have strengthened his case to stay, Tottenham are not short of options in the full-back positions.
Destiny Udogie, Pedro Porro, Ben Davies, Souza and new signing Andy Robertson all provide competition, while Micky van de Ven has regularly filled in at left-back for the Netherlands and Archie Gray was also used at right-back during Wednesday’s pre-season win over MK Dons.
With so many players available across both flanks, Spence may find it difficult to secure the consistent starting role he will be looking for ahead of another crucial season.
Reports in Italy have suggested the defender is keen on joining Inter Milan and playing Champions League football.
The Serie A side are believed to feel that Spence’s desire to make the move could strengthen their negotiating position, with the full-back reportedly accepting that regular starts at Tottenham are far from guaranteed under De Zerbi and viewing a switch to the San Siro as the best option to protect his England place.
