We have now taken a look at the underlying numbers comparing Jan Paul van Hecke to Tottenham’s Luka Vuskovic amid Brighton’s latest £30m offer.

Brighton and Hove Albion’s latest £30m bid for Tottenham Hotspur wonderkid Luka Vuskovic will surely have come as a shock to many Spurs supporters.

While several top European clubs have been linked with a move for the Croatian defender, Brighton had hardly been mentioned among the interested sides.

However, taking a closer look, the interest is perhaps not entirely surprising given Brighton’s reputation for identifying talented young players early, giving them opportunities and eventually selling them on for huge profits.

Still, many Tottenham fans believe selling Vuskovic would be the wrong move given his ceiling, and several Spurs insiders have also backed that view.

Tottenham’s Luka Vuskovic numbers show why Brighton are interested

Vuskovic has impressed at every stage of his young career. Two seasons ago, Spurs Web reported that the Croat was the highest-rated young centre-back in Europe during his spell with Belgian side Westerlo.

The defender also developed a reputation as a goalscoring centre-back after netting seven league goals, one more than Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka managed during the 2024-25 Premier League season.

The teenager took another major step forward last season during his spell with Hamburg, once again impressing defensively while continuing his strong scoring record with six goals.

His performances were rewarded with a place in the Bundesliga Team of the Season, underlining just how quickly he is developing at only 19 years old.

Spurs could see Brighton as ideal Luka Vuskovic loan destination

Brighton had one of the Premier League’s strongest defences last season, with only Arsenal and Manchester City conceding fewer goals than the Seagulls.

At the heart of that defence was Dutch centre-back Jan Paul van Hecke, who remains firmly on Tottenham’s radar.

Spurs are reportedly preparing a third offer after Brighton rejected their previous two bids, and with the Seagulls demanding £70m despite Van Hecke having just one year left on his deal, it increasingly feels like his time on the south coast could be nearing an end.

That only makes Brighton’s interest in Vuskovic appear even less random, especially if they view him as a long-term replacement for Van Hecke.

Looking at the underlying numbers from last season, Van Hecke outperformed Vuskovic in several possession-based metrics, particularly passing and progressive play, while Vuskovic excelled more defensively.

It is important to note that Vuskovic played for a Hamburg side battling near the bottom of the Bundesliga table, where possession was often limited, naturally affecting his passing metrics while increasing his defensive workload.

Van Hecke, meanwhile, operated in a Brighton side competing much higher up the table and qualifying for European football.

The Dutchman remains the more polished and proven option right now, but Vuskovic’s ceiling is enormous.

A loan move to Brighton, where he could play regularly and continue developing key areas of his game, could suit all parties – although reports claiming personal terms have already been agreed with Vuskovic certainly complicate matters.
