‘I don’t think they know what they’re doing’ – Simon Jordan tears into Tottenham owners after £237m spree

Tottenham Hotspur’s lavish summer spending has sparked fierce debate, with Simon Jordan launching a scathing attack on the club’s ownership after their £237m transfer splurge.

Tottenham Hotspur’s approach to the summer transfer window would surely have shocked several fans and onlookers.

For one, Spurs have gone from a conservative approach when it comes to signing players to a more expansive style, splurging cash and paying high wages.

That all kicked off this summer transfer window when a £52m fee was agreed with Brighton for the purchase of Jan Paul van Hecke.

Spurs quickly followed that piece of business by spending big on Matues Fernandes, breaking their club record fee for a single purchase.

It did not take long, however, before Tottenham went one better with reports revealing that a £100m deal had been agreed with Newcastle for Sandro Tonali.

Simon Jordan slams Tottenham transfer spree

Tottenham’s business now totals £237m spent this summer, the second-highest outlay in the club’s history. While fans are delighted with their side’s show of ambition, former Crystal Palace chairman Simon Jordan has ripped into Spurs’ transfer dealings.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Jordan questioned the motivation behind certain signings, particularly Tonali’s move from Newcastle to Tottenham.

He suggested that the reasoning behind such transfers reveals more about the players than the club itself.

He said: “What does it tell you about the players that are joining them? Because with respect to Tonali, why would you go from Newcastle to Tottenham Hotspur?

“I suspect it is because of the money – that tells you that you have either got a player that is playing for money, or a player that is playing for ambition because you are going to a side that finished fourth from bottom of the league last year.”

Jordan questions Tottenham ownership strategy

While Tottenham have splashed the cash at times this summer, the club have also balanced it out with a few shrewd signings.

The likes of Andy Robertson, Martin Dubravka and Marcos Senesi have also moved to Spurs, but on free transfers.

Still, Jordan remains adamant that Tottenham’s hierarchy does not know what they are doing, criticising the ownership and their new transfer strategy.

Speaking again on talkSPORT, he argued that Spurs have abandoned financial discipline in favour of reckless spending.

The 58-year-old added: “I do not think they know what they are doing. They are paying massively over the odds for these players.

“I think you have gone from one extreme to the other – you had football expertise that Daniel [Levy] and his team exhibited at certain times, but they did not have the balls or the financial desire to push the envelope. Now you have gone the other way, which is you do not care about the financial concerns of what you are doing.

“You are just going to spend whatever you want to spend. And the fans will love it. But when you are looking at what they are buying…”
