Roberto De Zerbi has shared why he is excited by Marcos Senesi’s arrival at Tottenham Hotspur ahead of his first full season in charge of the club.

After months of intense transfer rumours, Spurs finally confirmed today that Senesi has signed on a free transfer, with the centre-back arriving in North London following four seasons at Bournemouth.

The 29-year-old has been one of the most consistent central defenders in the Premier League over recent years, becoming an important cog for Andoni Iraola’s side.

The Tottenham boss has now revealed what he expects the Argentina international to add to the Spurs backline.

Roberto De Zerbi reveals why Marcos Senesi is a perfect fit for Tottenham

Senesi registered the most interceptions of any defender in the Premier League last season, while he ranked second for combined blocks and clearances, behind only Virgil van Dijk.

However, it is quality in possession that De Zerbi highlighted, with the Italian’s system reliant on centre-backs to build out from the back.

The Tottenham boss also spoke glowingly of the 29-year-old’s mentality and admitted that his arrival gives the Lilywhites plenty of flexibility.

De Zerbi told the club’s official website: “Marcos’ experience, quality on the ball, and competitive edge will strengthen us defensively, as well as giving us flexibility in formation.

“He’s comfortable playing in a possession-based team, reads the game very well and has the personality to thrive in a demanding environment.

“I also love his mentality and desire to keep improving, and I’m looking forward to working with him and seeing the big contribution he can make to the team.”

Johan Lange explains why Spurs are ‘the perfect’ club for Senesi

At the end of last season, Vinai Venkatesham admitted that Tottenham’s squad is lacking the right mix of experience and leadership, and that has certainly been addressed in the club’s first two signings of the summer.

Johan Lange referred to Senesi’s leadership qualities, with the Dane suggesting that Spurs have got the centre-back at the right time in his career.

The Tottenham sporting director said about the club’s latest addition: “Marcos is a defender who brings a combination of quality, intelligence and leadership to our squad.

“His experience at the highest level, his composure in possession and his desire to compete for every ball make him an excellent fit for the way we want to play. We are delighted to welcome him to the Club and believe this is the perfect place for him as he enters a great stage in his career.”
