Fabrizio Romano has weighed in on the possibility of Tottenham Hotspur adding a new centre-forward to their squad before the window slams shut.
According to reports, Spurs were a day away from launching a big offer for their top striker target, Eli Junior Kroupi, when the striker went down with a major injury last week.
Subsequently, it has emerged that Tottenham have identified the likes of Fisnik Asllani, Nicolo Tresoldi and Ferran Torres as potential alternatives for Kroupi.
Even Victor Osimhen has been mooted as a target for the Lilywhites, who are now less than two weeks away from their first Premier League game of the season.
Tottenham’s interest in Omar Marmoush has been knocked back by Man City
It has been reported by a number of sources this summer that Tottenham explored a deal for Omar Marmoush, who Roberto De Zerbi is a big fan of.
This has now been backed up by Fabrizio Romano, who revealed that Marmoush was one of the strikers who Spurs were keen on, but City were not keen to sell the only backup option they have to Erling Haaland.
When asked if he expects Tottenham to add a new striker to their squad, Romano said on GiveMeSport’s Market Madness Podcast (via GiveMeSport): “This depends on the opportunities because, for example, they had conversations with Manchester City about Omar Marmoush at the beginning of the window. Then obviously, City don’t want to lose too many players.
“Also, it’s not easy to find strikers on the market. So, if you let Omar Marmoush go, then it’s not easy to find another striker at Manchester City level. Okay, they have Erling Haaland, but finding a proper back-up is not easy. That’s the point.”
Spurs are ‘completely focused on wingers’
The likes of Savinho and Cody Gakpo appear to be at the top of Spurs’ wishlist, as we embark on the final few weeks of the transfer window, with the Lilywhites not appearing to have expressed a concrete interest in any number nine.
Romano has confirmed that De Zerbi’s men are focused on reinforcing the wide areas, and want two wingers through the door before the window slams shut.
He added: “It’s not easy to find top strikers on the market. Tottenham at the moment, according to my information, are completely focused on the wingers. So wingers are the top, top priority, and they will sign two.
“Then, if they have the budget and a good opportunity to sign a striker, we will see. But at the moment, the focus remains on wingers.”
