Tim Sherwood says big Spurs structure change ‘warms the hearts of Tottenham fans’

Tim Sherwood has weighed in on how things have changed at Tottenham Hotspur this summer and why the fans should be pleased with where the power now lies at N17.

Despite offsetting their big spending with several major sales, Tottenham still have a net spend of around £144m so far this summer, and the club are not done in the transfer window just yet.

Reports indicate that Spurs could add two more wingers and a striker to their squad before the window slams shut if the right opportunities open up.

The huge turnover in the squad is what De Zerbi called for at the end of last season, and the Italian will attempt to take the club back to the top end of the Premier League table after getting his wish.

Tim Sherwood claims Tottenham need to prioritise trimming their squad

After bringing six experienced players through the door, Sherwood believes that De Zerbi’s men need to prioritise trimming their squad over the coming weeks.

He suggested that Tottenham’s transfer targets for the remaining weeks of the transfer window will very much depend on who the club moves on.

Sherwood told BetGoodwin: “It’s hard to think about who else Spurs should sign because you just don’t know who they’ve got coming back to fitness.

“The likes of Dejan Kulusevski, that’ll be a big plus when he’s back. James Maddison was obviously back at the back end of the season, and Mohammed Kudus will be fit again. It’ll be interesting to see what they do with a few of the others.

“I mean, he can’t keep everyone. He’s got a huge squad there now, so he’s going to have to get rid of some centre-halves. That’s what he’s going to need to do because he’s brought in a lot. I think they’ve got seven first-team centre-halves there; some players are going to have to leave.”

Sherwood says Spurs fans will be over the moon with De Zerbi’s power

With Tottenham yet to appoint a new sporting director this summer, it appears that De Zerbi is the one who is calling the shots with respect to the club’s transfer targets and squad building.

Sherwood believes that Spurs fans must be pleased with that correction from the club after the hierarchy was accused for years of not backing their managers.

The former Tottenham interim head coach added: “The good thing is with Tottenham and their transfers is that one man is making the decision now, and that man is De Zerbi.

“He’s a footballing man, so I think it warms the hearts of Tottenham fans, where before they didn’t really know who was bringing in these players. But this guy is actually putting his hand up and saying, ‘Yeah, it’s my decision.’ So that’s really key.”
