Tottenham Hotspur are edging closer to signing another one of their top summer targets after completing the signing of Mateus Fernandes from West Ham.

Spurs broke their transfer record to secure Fernandes, with the Lilywhites sending out a statement of their ambition by paying £85m for the West Ham man.

Tottenham managed to see off competition from Man United for the 21-year-old, even though the Red Devils had Champions League football to offer.

Spurs fans are over the moon that the club are flexing their financial muscle and showing the sort of ambition that the owners promised, and there may be more to come over the coming days.

Sandro Tonali is ‘getting closer’ to joining Tottenham

It has been reported widely that Tottenham’s pursuit of Sandro Tonali is independent of the Fernandes deal, and Spurs fans have now been given some good news regarding the Newcastle man.

Journalist Nicolo Schira has now revealed that the Italy internaitonal is ‘getting closer’ to joining the Lilywhites in another club record deal.

He revealed that Tottenham have a total agreement with the 26-year-old on personal terms and that De Zerbi played a role in convincing the former AC Milan man about the move.

Scheira wrote on X: “Sandro Tonali is getting closer to Tottenham from Newcastle for a transfer fee over €100m (£86m). The midfielder has a total agreement with THFC for a contract until 2032 (€12m/year) and has given his availability to De Zerbi, who had a key role in convincing him despite two other bids from top English clubs.”

Tonali signing would send out a warning to the rest of the Premier League

If Tottenham do break their transfer record again in quick succession by landing Tonali, that will certainly send out a message to the rest of the Premier League and also their other transfer targets.

It would have the effect of making Spurs a much more attractive destination for the other big-name players on their radar, who can be much more easily convinced about the merit of the project.

This is exactly the sort of ambition that Tottenham needed to show after back-to-back 117th-placed finishes. However, a deal for the Newcastle man may not be easy, with Man City now allegedly readying a major offer for Tonali.
