Tottenham Hotspur believe Roberto De Zerbi’s influence could prove decisive in their battle with Manchester United for Mateus Fernandes.
In light of Yves Bissouma’s departure, Joao Palhinha’s desire to return to Sporting CP and Brentford’s interest in Pape Matar Sarr, Tottenham Hotspur have been forced into the market for midfield reinforcements.
Spurs are already pushing hard to sign Newcastle United star Sandro Tonali despite the Italian’s reported £100m valuation. The midfielder is believed to be open to the move, with Roberto De Zerbi playing a major role behind the scenes.
Spurs Web also reported this week that Tottenham have entered the race for West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes. Importantly, that pursuit is understood to be separate from the club’s interest in Tonali, with De Zerbi keen to add both players to his squad.
Now, an interesting update has emerged regarding Tottenham’s chances of landing the Portuguese midfielder.

Tottenham increasingly confident over Mateus Fernandes deal
According to TeamTALK, Tottenham are becoming more optimistic that they can win the race for Fernandes despite strong competition from Manchester United.
The report claims Spurs view the 21-year-old as a key part of De Zerbi’s rebuild and believe the Italian’s influence is helping them attract players who may previously have looked elsewhere.
That is something Tottenham supporters have already seen this summer. Jan Paul van Hecke reportedly prioritised a move to N17 because of his relationship with De Zerbi, while Sandro Tonali is also said to be keen to work under the Italian manager despite the club not offering European football next season.
TeamTALK add that De Zerbi’s reputation, personality and tactical ideas are proving to be a major selling point during recruitment discussions. As a result, Tottenham feel increasingly capable of competing for top targets, even when rival clubs may appear more attractive on paper.
Manchester United have their own advantages
Manchester United are believed to be further along in their pursuit, having already opened discussions over a potential move for Fernandes. Spurs are yet to reach that stage.
TeamTALK suggest United remain confident of winning the battle for the midfielder’s signature. Champions League football is one obvious attraction, while the opportunity to play alongside fellow Portuguese international Bruno Fernandes is another.
The report adds that Fernandes has long admired the United captain, and the prospect of developing alongside him in Michael Carrick’s midfield is viewed as a significant pull.
For Tottenham, the challenge now is whether De Zerbi’s project can outweigh those advantages. If recent transfer dealings are anything to go by, Spurs will certainly fancy their chances.
