Tottenham Hotspur have now made their stance on Cristian Romero’s future clear amid interest from La Liga champions Barcelona.

Tottenham now face a huge rebuilding job following a disastrous 2025/26 campaign that saw the club narrowly avoid relegation to the Championship.

Improving the overall quality of the squad is crucial, although Spurs also need to move on players who are surplus to requirements after several underwhelming seasons in north London.

A number of names have already been mentioned by pundits as possible departures this summer, including Richarlison and Randal Kolo Muani, following disappointing campaigns for Tottenham.

Tottenham set Cristian Romero asking price amid Spain interest

Interest also remains in club captain Cristian Romero, with the Argentina international reportedly attracting attention from several Spanish clubs looking to lure him away from Tottenham.

Spurs supporters recently voiced their frustrations at Romero after reports claimed he was set to miss the final game of the season following a trip to Argentina.

The 28-year-old, however, was present for the Everton game after the backlash from fans, many of whom called for Tottenham to sell him.

According to DSports in Argentina, Spurs have now made their position on Romero’s future clear ahead of the summer window.

The report explains that Tottenham are aware of the growing interest in the World Cup winner but will not allow him to leave easily, with the club demanding a significant fee.

Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid are all said to be interested, while Spurs have reportedly made it clear from the outset that they want £51m (€60m) for Romero.

That valuation is broadly in line with the alleged £53m release clause that Romero’s father previously revealed.

Barcelona remain keen on Tottenham defender Cristian Romero

Barcelona are among the clubs pushing hardest to sign Romero after their preferred target, Alessandro Bastoni, was deemed too expensive for the Spanish side.

The Catalan club are now looking at Romero as a more attainable option to strengthen their defence, although Spurs are still expected to demand a sizeable fee for their captain.

It is also claimed that Romero is open to leaving north London due to his strained relationship with the Tottenham hierarchy, while Spurs are prepared to listen to offers.

However, Barcelona believe they can land the defender for a lower fee, although it remains to be seen whether Tottenham will budge on their valuation.
