Tottenham have been encouraged to pursue a move for a Saudi Pro League star who has scored 72 goals in 93 appearances, as well as 33‑year‑old Harry Kane, who has one year remaining on his Bayern Munich contract.
There certainly will be genuine excitement within the Tottenham Hotspur camp following the Lilywhites’ nearly £250 million outlay in the summer transfer window so far.
Spurs have overhauled their midfield and strengthened their defence by signing six new players.
That significant outlay leaves Tottenham as the summer’s highest spenders, signalling that they may have finally moved on from their previously cautious approach in the transfer market.
But the spending spree is far from over, with Spurs still targeting two or three additional signings.
Could Tottenham challenge for the title with an elite striker?
Roberto De Zerbi has made it clear that Tottenham fans will be happier by the end of the summer as the club continues to pursue attacking reinforcements.
A handful of strikers have been linked with the Lilywhites this summer, including Nicolas Jackson, Victor Osimhen, Dusan Vlahovic and Cody Gakpo.
However, talkSPORT hosts Carlton Cole and Adam Catterall believe Spurs should aim even higher. The pair argued that adding a proven elite goalscorer could elevate Tottenham from top‑four hopefuls to genuine Premier League title challengers, urging the club to secure the signature of either Ivan Toney or Harry Kane.
Discussing the issue on talkSPORT, Catterall said: “It’s going in the right direction to behave in a different way in the transfer market. I just look at the top end of the pitch and I think to myself where’s the goals coming from in this side?”
Cole added: “They need a 20 goal a season striker. There’s not many in the world, is there?
“I think that they’d look at bringing Ivan Toney or try to get Harry Kane back. They’ll be flying if they bring him back.”
Catterall responded: “If Harry Kane came back into THIS Spurs side I’d move them from top six to a top four with a serious push [for the title].
“Is Dominic Solanke or Richarlison getting you 20 goals a season?”
In reply, Cole added: “Richarlison, no. We’ve seen his body of work. But I still have hope for Solanke if he can stay fit. I like him as a player.
“He’s just never never fit, that’s the problem. If you can get a run of games and get that confidence I think you could be your man because they’ve got someone there that can put the ball in the back of the net. They’ve got [James] Maddison coming back as well.
“They’ve got players coming back from injury where they’re gonna be looking up and with the recruitment as well if they’ve got it right. It’s been very very good.”
Osimhen fits the profile Spurs need
At present, Osimhen stands out as the striker who fits the bill of an elite forward capable of hitting 20 goals a season.
Tottenham are rumoured to have put down a £55m bid for Osimhen this week, although Galatasaray are holding out for £65m.
The Nigerian striker produced similar numbers last season with Galatasaray, scoring 22 goals in all competitions, including seven goals in 10 Champions League appearances.
