Fabrizio Romano explains the one thing holding up Tottenham’s Savinho deal

Tottenham Hotspur remain confident of signing Savinho this summer, but Fabrizio Romano has now explained why the transfer has taken longer than many supporters expected.

It has already been a hugely successful summer transfer window for Tottenham, with six first-team signings arriving in North London. However, one deal that is still yet to be completed is the move for Savinho, despite the Brazilian being linked with Spurs long before any of those arrivals.

The Manchester City winger has been on Tottenham’s radar since last summer, but Pep Guardiola’s side were unwilling to sanction a sale at the time. After struggling for regular minutes over the past season, though, City’s stance has softened, with reports suggesting they have also lowered their asking price by around £10m compared to 12 months ago.

The 22-year-old has already agreed personal terms with Tottenham and is keen on making the move. With few obvious obstacles standing in the way, many supporters have questioned why negotiations have dragged on, and Fabrizio Romano has now provided an answer.

‘Savinho remains a priority for Tottenham’- Fabrizio Romano

As we have reported several times throughout the summer, the delay has largely come down to Manchester City’s own transfer business rather than anything on Tottenham’s side.

In fact, Spurs remain confident of striking a £60m deal for Savinho, but City first want to bring in a replacement before giving the move the green light.

Romano has now backed that stance while speaking on his YouTube channel, saying, “On Tottenham in terms of incomings. I stand by my news. It was end of May, June, July, I maintain my information. Tottenham want Savinho. Tottenham will go for Savinho. There are negotiations ongoing club to club…

“Savinho was already prepared to go to Tottenham one year ago. They wanted him in summer 2025. It was an exclusive story. I remember July 2025. Then the deal didn’t happen because City decided to keep Savinho to offer him a new contract in September.

“But now Savinho wants to go to Tottenham and Tottenham are negotiating for Savinho with Man City. Then in order to get the green light for the move, Man City would need a replacement for Savinho.

“That’s the point. But Tottenham are working on the Savinho deal. Not today, not yesterday, but I told you in June and I stand by my information. Tottenham and Savinho, this remains the priority.”

Savinho’s social media activity continues to fuel Tottenham speculation

Savinho has also done little to quieten speculation over a move to North London through his recent activity on social media.

The first clue arrived last month when Xavi Simons shared an old photograph of the pair together from their time at PSV Eindhoven.

And a few days ago, the Tottenham midfielder added to the excitement after responding with the eyes emoji when a Spurs supporter asked on TikTok whether Savinho would be joining him in North London.

The Brazilian has also interacted with Tottenham-related posts himself, liking Mateus Fernandes’ announcement after his move to Spurs before commenting on Pedro Porro’s Instagram post following Spain’s World Cup quarter-final victory over Belgium.

More recently, Savinho uploaded an Instagram story featuring a picture of a gym, images from his former clubs and a travelling bag. Some supporters also pointed out that photos of him in a Manchester City shirt appeared to be missing, while others noticed he seemed to be training at his home gym rather than at City’s training ground.
