Roberto De Zerbi has reacted to Pedro Porro signing a new long-term deal at Tottenham Hotspur.

Spurs announced on Sunday that Porro has signed a new long-term contract at the club, with reports suggesting that the player has committed his future to the club until 2030.

This move from the Lilywhites comes amidst rumours linking the Spurs right-back with some of the biggest clubs in Europe, with the North Londoners moving decisively to tie up a key player.

The Spain international has now made 152 appearances for the club since signing from Sporting Lisbon in January 2023, and looks set to add a lot more to that tally as he enters his peak years.

Roberto De Zerbi loves the mentality of Tottenham star Pedro Porro

De Zerbi has admitted he is delighted that the club have managed to tie down the 26-year-old, given the quality that he possesses both offensively and defensively.

The Italian confessed that he is also a fan of Porro’s mentality and expressed a desire to help the right-back reach even greater heights during the coming years.

De Zerbi told Tottenham’s official website: “Pedro is a very important player for us, who has consistently shown his ability to influence matches in both defensive and attacking situations.

“As well as his technical quality, I also love his mentality. Every day he wants to work, to learn and to improve, and these are the characteristics that help players reach the highest level.

“He understands football in a very intelligent way, and brings energy, intensity and personality to the team. This new contract is good news for everyone at the Club. We believe in Pedro, and I am excited to continue working with him and helping him achieve even more in the coming years.”

Why Spurs cannot have afforded to lose Porro’s leadership

Tottenham Hotspur are expected to lose a core part of their leadership group this summer, with Cristian Romero continuing to be linked with a move away from Spurs.

The Argentine could be followed out of the door by Guglielmo Vicario, who is being backed to return to Serie A this summer.

The Lilywhites could not afford to lose Porro this summer, not only because of his quality but also because of the leadership he provides and the respect he commands in the dressing room.
