Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed the signing of Mateus Fernandes, with the midfielder smashing the club’s record transfer fee to become their fifth addition of the summer.
Back-to-back 17th-place finishes in the Premier League in the last two seasons were never going to be deemed acceptable by Tottenham Hotspur fans, who have since demanded far better from those higher up at the club.
A stern statement was issued by the Tottenham supporters’ group calling for change ahead of the 2026/27 season, after the Lewis family promised to show ambition.
Many fans have been watching closely to see those promises fulfilled this summer, and so far, Tottenham look to be talking the talk and walking the walk.
Spurs have completed the signings of four players, mostly in defence. Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi and Martin Dubravka arrived on free transfers, while Jan Paul van Hecke had been the marquee addition at £52m – at least until now.

Tottenham confirm Mateus Fernandes signing
Tottenham Hotspur have now confirmed their fifth signing of the summer transfer window. The club have finally moved to strengthen their midfield ranks with the addition of West Ham United’s Mateus Fernandes.
The 21-year-old arrives as Tottenham’s ninth Portuguese signing in their history and, crucially, as the club’s record signing.
Tottenham and West Ham agreed on a staggering £85m fee, with Spurs beating rivals Manchester United to secure the Portuguese midfielder’s signature.
Spurs’ midfield depth after Fernandes signing
Fernandes now becomes Tottenham’s second signing from West Ham United in the space of a year. Last summer, the Lilywhites agreed a £55m deal for Mohammed Kudus, marking the first piece of business between the two London clubs since Scott Parker’s move back in 2011.
Tottenham’s midfield now looks incredibly stacked, with a host of players boasting Premier League experience.
Fernandes, however, could hold the record as the club’s most expensive addition for only a short while, as Spurs close in on a deal for Sandro Tonali, who could cost over £100m.
