Tottenham deploy clever strategy to get higher bids for Lucas Bergvall this summer

Tottenham Hotspur’s plans for Lucas Bergvall this summer may be very different to the stance they have taken publicly regarding the midfielder’s future.

Multiple sources have reported over the last week that Tottenham have informed Bergvall they want him to stay after the midfielder expressed a desire to seek a fresh challenge.

However, it is unclear if the 20-year-old is convinced about having an important role in Roberto De Zerbi’s project, especially after the Lilywhites spent a combined £185m to sign Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes.

Reports indicate Bergvall remains determined to seek a new challenge away from Spurs, with the youngster prioritising getting regular game time in his favoured number eight role next season.

Tottenham backed to get a bidding war going for Lucas Bergvall

Pete O’Rourke has suggested that despite Spurs adopting a ‘not for sale’ stance on the Sweden international, the player is very much for sale to the highest bidder.

The journalist believes that Tottenham are keen for more interested clubs to enter the fray so that they can get a bidding war going for the midfielder.

When asked if he expects Bergvall to leave N17, O’Rourke told Football Insider: “Spurs are going to have to balance the books, so selling somebody like Bergvall, who they’ll make a big profit on having signed him from Sweden, I think could be smart business.

“I think there’ll be a lot of competition in Europe for Bergvall as well, so look, Spurs will be hoping there’s a bit of an auction for him and they can get the biggest price possible for the Swedish midfielder.”

Football Insider also reported that sources say ‘Tottenham are keen to wait and encourage more clubs to enter the race for Lucas Bergvall before potentially selling him to the highest bidder’.

What fee do Spurs want for Bergvall as interest mounts?

Nottingham Forest are extremely keen on signing Bergvall, while sources indicate that AC Milan are also interested in the Tottenham midfielder.

It was reported a little over a week ago that Spurs had rejected a €50m (£43m) offer for Bergvall from an unnamed English club.

Several other Italian and German clubs are also thought to be keeping an eye on the Tottenham youngster, and the Lilywhites will be hoping that a bidding war soon ensues for the player.
