Tottenham Hotspur look set to complete the signing of Mateus Fernandes, but where will he stand among the club’s most expensive transfers?
It has been a week since Spurs last announced a new arrival, with back-up goalkeeper Martin Dubravka joining from Burnley.
That move was followed by confirmation of Antonin Kinsky’s improved deal earlier this evening. Now Tottenham have gone a step further, securing a deal for Fernandes after weeks of speculation.
The 21-year-old was highly sought after, with Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid all in the race, but Spurs have won the battle for his signature.

Mateus Fernandes breaks Tottenham transfer record
Fabrizio Romano confirmed the deal with his trademark “here we go” and reported the fee at £85 million (€100m). That figure smashes Tottenham’s previous transfer record, surpassing the £65 million (€76m) spent on Dominic Solanke in 2024.
The move comes shortly after Spurs Web reported a fresh £100 million (€117m) cash injection from the Lewis family, giving the club added financial muscle in the market.
Tottenham’s most expensive signings:

Spurs could break record again with Tonali
Tottenham are far from finished in the market, with further signings expected. Sandro Tonali continues to be linked with a move to north London, and if Spurs were to complete a deal, it could push their transfer record even higher.
Newcastle United are understood to be holding out for a £100 million (€117m) fee for the Italian, though Spurs face competition from Manchester City and Arsenal.
In fact, Tottenham are said to be readying a £100m bid to match that asking price, so Mateus Fernandes may only hold the Spurs transfer record for a matter of days.
