A Newcastle-based journalist has made a controversial claim about Tottenham’s financial situation and the race for Lucas Bergvall, which has been contested by a Spurs insider.
It has been an open secret over the last two weeks that Bergvall wants to seek a new challenge away from Spurs after seeing the Lilywhites make some big-money midfield additions earlier this summer.
Tottenham first rejected a £38m offer from Nottingham Forest for the Sweden international, and Forest are now expected to return with a second offer.
Just a few days ago, it emerged that Newcastle’s £46m offer was also rejected by Spurs, who are open to selling the 20-year-old if their valuation is met.
Tottenham offered Lucas Bergvall to Newcastle due to their financial condition
Chronicle Live journalist Lee Ryder has now claimed that, contrary to reports from other outlets, it is Spurs who offered the attacking midfielder to the Magpies.
He remarked that Tottenham’s financial situation had worsened after their signing of Sandro Tonali and that the Lilywhites are now looking to raise funds to offset their spending.
Ryder wrote on X: “THFC financial situation understood to have changed after splashing out on Sandro Tonali. NUFC were offered Lucas Bergvall by Spurs as they look to drum up funds and enquired on a price. Interest but no deal done yet. High-level talks have taken place. Newcastle working on other deals too.”
Claim about Spurs’ finances rubbished by insider
Tottenham insider Paul O’Keefe, was quick to rubbish Ryder’s claim about the Lilywhites’ finances, insisting that the North London club’s balance sheet remains ‘absolutely fine’.
He made it clear that Spurs have no intention of selling any of their players below their market value.
O’Keefe wrote on X: “Hello Lee Ryder, you’re talking nonsense, pal. Spurs finances are absolutely fine. They just don’t want to be selling players beneath their value. No wonder you turned off the comments.”
