Former Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld has revealed the player he believes would be the perfect long-term replacement for Son Heung-min as Spurs continue searching for attacking reinforcements this summer.
Roberto De Zerbi recently admitted that Tottenham are only “60 per cent” through their summer business, revealing that strengthening the attack is now the club’s main priority after already spending £237m rebuilding the defence and midfield.
Several high-profile forwards have been linked with a move to North London over recent weeks, including Cody Gakpo, Ferran Torres, Omar Marmoush and Marcus Rashford. De Zerbi has also suggested that Spurs expect at least two more arrivals before the transfer window closes on September 1.
While Tottenham’s pursuit of Gakpo has gathered momentum over the past few days, one former Spurs favourite believes the club should instead focus their attention elsewhere.
Toby Alderweireld believes Marcus Rashford is Tottenham’s ideal Son Heung-min successor
Speaking to Hajper, Toby Alderweireld backed Marcus Rashford as the player Tottenham should pursue to replace Son Heung-min.
“I am a big fan of Marcus Rashford. Like every football player he just needs that confidence.
“He’s very direct, very quick, and especially dangerous from the left like Son Heung-min, coming inside to shoot or go down the left, so for me I think he would be a very good signing for Tottenham Hotspur.
“You never know. But I like him a lot but he does need to feel that confidence. He did well at Barcelona but now is the time to step up for his own sake because you can not keep saying he is a big talent.
“Now is Rashford’s time. He needs to decide that now is the time to show up and shine but I am very curious to see where he ends up this season.”
Why Marcus Rashford to Tottenham still looks unlikely
Despite Alderweireld’s backing, there remain several significant obstacles standing in the way of any move to Tottenham.
Reports regarding Manchester United’s stance have been mixed throughout the summer, with some outlets claiming the Red Devils are keen to offload Rashford, while others suggest Michael Carrick is considering reintegrating the forward into his first-team plans.
The England international’s £325,000 per week wages would be enough to deter many clubs, although previous reports have suggested Tottenham would be prepared to match those salary demands.
The major obstacle, however, is Manchester United’s reluctance to sell Rashford to a Premier League rival. As things stand, a loan move is considered the most realistic way he leaves Old Trafford this summer.
Rashford is also not thought to be keen on joining Tottenham, with the England international instead prioritising Champions League football.
