Tottenham Hotspur have had a busy summer transfer window, but with the September 1 deadline fast approaching, there could still be more movement at both ends of the squad.
Three months without competitive action ended in miserable fashion for Tottenham on Saturday as they suffered an unexpected 3-0 defeat to Brentford on the opening day of the Premier League season.
That performance should not, however, be taken as a reflection of the attacking options Roberto De Zerbi will have at his disposal once his latest additions are officially integrated.
Spurs have completed the signings of Savio and Omar Marmoush this week, although the latter is still awaiting his official announcement from the club.
Those deals have taken Tottenham’s summer spending to a club-record £322m, but the North Londoners are not expected to stop there.
At least one more signing could arrive before the September 1 deadline, with several sources suggesting that the final addition is likely to be another wide player.
With that in mind, here is a look at the biggest Tottenham transfer stories we have covered over the last few days, as well as the potential exits that could shape the final week of the window.
Tottenham transfer round-up: Cody Gakpo transfer latest
Cody Gakpo has been heavily linked with Tottenham for much of the summer and, as things stand, remains the likeliest candidate to become Spurs’ ninth and final signing of the window.
Tottenham have already seen a £60m bid for the Dutchman rejected and are now preparing a second offer, having agreed personal terms with Gakpo earlier in the summer.
There was a surprise development on Monday, however, when Fabrizio Romano revealed that Manchester City had entered the race for the Liverpool forward after losing Savio to Tottenham. A move to the Etihad is still considered ‘unlikely’ at this stage, though, while Liverpool’s position remains clear.
Romano added that Liverpool will only consider selling Gakpo if they can bring in two wingers before the window closes, with Paris Saint-Germain’s Bradley Barcola their priority target.
Reports from France suggest Barcola is increasingly likely to end up at Anfield this week, which could strengthen Tottenham’s chances of landing Gakpo.
Transfer expert Nicolo Schira has also confirmed Spurs’ plans to return with a second bid, while revealing that Chelsea’s Mykhaylo Mudryk is ‘Spurs’ plan B’.
Surprise striker emerges amid Richarlison uncertainty
Omar Marmoush’s arrival, once officially confirmed, could make it increasingly difficult for Richarlison to see a long-term future in North London.
The Brazilian has been linked with a number of clubs throughout the summer, including Everton, sides in Turkey and Saudi Arabia, while Roberto De Zerbi has also been unable to guarantee that the striker will remain at Tottenham.
There was a surprise development on Monday, when Jean-Philippe Mateta was reportedly offered to Spurs by his representatives amid his ongoing contract dispute with Crystal Palace.
Tottenham have long admired the Frenchman and are now keeping a close eye on his situation, although Aston Villa and Manchester United are also understood to be interested.
Palace’s current stance is that Mateta will not be allowed to leave this summer, while the striker remains keen on finding a way out of Selhurst Park, as has been the case since the turn of the year.
That stance could still change before September 1, particularly if a suitable offer arrives for the 28-year-old.
Daniel Munoz makes decision about Tottenham transfer
Crystal Palace have also been involved in another Tottenham transfer story, with Daniel Munoz emerging as a potential option at right-back following Djed Spence’s move to Inter Milan.
The Colombian could reportedly cost around £20m, but a move to North London now looks unlikely after Roberto De Zerbi made it clear that he is happy with his current options in the position, with Pedro Porro first choice and Archie Gray capable of providing cover.
Munoz himself is also understood to have reservations about the move because of the potential lack of regular playing time. The 30-year-old has established himself as a starter at Palace and would not want to leave that role to become Porro’s deputy.
New Palace boss Pierre Sage has only added to those doubts, recently insisting that Munoz is ‘happy to be’ at the club and that Palace are equally happy to have him.
Pape Sarr and a four-horse race
Pape Sarr’s future is another one to watch during the final days of the transfer window, with Roberto De Zerbi admitting last week that he does not know whether the midfielder will still be at Tottenham when the window closes, despite describing him as an ‘important player’.
The Senegal international is reportedly keen on leaving amid interest from Brentford, Al Ahli, Aston Villa and, most recently, Galatasaray.
The Turkish giants now appear to be leading the race, with Sarr reportedly having already agreed on personal terms with the Istanbul club.
Tottenham are also open to selling the Senegalese International, but have yet to reach an agreement with Galatasaray.
The Turkish club are understood to have submitted an offer, although it falls short of Spurs’ valuation of the midfielder, with conflicting reports putting Tottenham’s asking price somewhere between £30m and £50m.
Galatasaray are keen to complete the deal this week, but with Brentford, Al Ahli and Aston Villa also circling, there is every chance Sarr’s future could turn into a deadline-day bidding war.
